Ant Identification: Species Found In Chicago

We do not have a shortage of ants here in Chicago. These pests are everywhere. They build nests along sidewalks, in our yards, and even inside local homes when given the chance. Considering that these bugs are usually only 1/16 to ⅛” long and are either brown or black, it is often hard to identify different species locally. Keeping this in mind, we are going to do our best to give you tools to identify different types of ants inside or around your Chicago home.

Carpenter ants are one of the easiest species to identify. This is because of their larger size. These pests can grow to be ⅝” long and are black, red, or a combination of these colors. Colonies of carpenter ants are found inside wooden structures like trees, stumps, and boards inside homes.

Odorous house ants look like typical ants at first. These black or brown, 1/16 to ⅛” long pests are best identified by their abnormally shaped abdomens and the bad smell they produce when squished. Many liken this smell to that of rotten coconut.

Little black ants are one of the most common ant pests here in Chicago. They are about 1/16” long and are dark brown to jet black in color. Colonies of these pests can grow quite large and have multiple queens, making them harder to eliminate.

Pharaoh ants are another local species that are not terribly difficult to identify. These bugs are 1/16” long and have pale yellow bodies and darker-colored abdomens. Pharaoh ants are also one of the most problematic species locally, which we will talk more about in just a bit.

Ant Dangers: Understanding The Risks Of An Infestation

The good news with ants is that these pests are rarely a serious problem. Most local species that invade homes are just annoying. The worst you can expect is some food contamination and stress from constantly squishing these terrible bugs. That said, there are a few local ants that you should be worried about. We are talking about carpenter ants and pharaoh ants. Each of these insects causes trouble in a drastically different way.

Carpenter ants are best known for the way they build their nests inside structures of wood. Unlike termites, these local insects do not eat the wood they tunnel through. This makes them less destructive in the long term. Keeping this in mind, carpenter ants can still cause major problems to the structure of homes if they are allowed to build their nests uninterrupted. Common signs of these pests include frass (sawdust pushed out from entrance holes), and visible structural damage. Bring in our team of professionals if you see large ants inside or around your home or problems with structural wood on your property.

Pharaoh ants are not destructive like carpenter ants. They cause problems in a different way. Specifically, these pests are capable of picking up and spreading harmful disease-causing organisms. The two most common sicknesses you might contract from these yellowish bugs are salmonellosis and staphylococcus. A few other local ants have the ability to spread sickness but are less prolific at it.

At the end of the day, ants are a problem because people do not like having them indoors. These small insects invade homes all the time and are a huge stress for locals. If you do not like finding ants around your living areas, we would like to offer some options to get rid of and keep these pests at bay. Let’s start with some ant prevention tips that work great to deter these terrible little insects.

Ant Prevention Is Key: Effective Tips And Tricks

We are not the type of pest control provider that will tell you that DIY is useless. In fact, we highly support anyone who wants to find and implement methods to deter local species like ants. That said, here are the best ant prevention tips that our experts have put together.

  • Walk around your home’s exterior and check its foundation for gaps, holes, and cracks. Fill in these potential ant entry points using some silicone caulk or liquid cement.
  • Inspect window/door screens around your home and make sure they are in good working condition. It is also recommended to keep unscreened windows and doors shut when you are not using them.
  • Repair and replace damaged weatherstripping and door sweeps. With this, check all exterior doors and windows to make sure they are properly sealed and find out if they might need one of these sealants.
  • Regularly walk around your property and clean up things like fallen fruit, left-out food, and discarded beverage containers.
  • Invest in high-quality trash cans that have tight-fitting lids. Clean bins as they get dirty and do your best to not allow them to overflow.
  • Store all of your food items, including pet food, inside air-tight glass, plastic, or metal containers. Food stored inside refrigerators is especially safe from pests like ants.
  • Fix all leaky piping and fixtures inside your home. With this, make sure your gutters are clean and working properly.
  • Install a dehumidifier inside your home and do your best to address moisture spills as they occur.
  • Address cluttered areas inside your home, organize storage rooms, and do your best to keep things generally tidy.
  • Clean, clean, and clean some more.

In order to make sure ants stay out of your home, you have to do these steps perfectly. If not, you will leave the door open for an invasion in the future.
