Three Common Chicago Cockroaches
It may seem like all cockroaches are the same, but unfortunately for all of mankind, some cockroaches are more mobile, more dangerous, or more inclined to eat non-edible things. The most common cockroaches in Chicago show a range of differences.
- American Cockroach: These roaches are reddish-brown with a yellowish figure-eight behind their heads. They are oval shaped and can grow to be over two inches in length. They fly short distances and prefer areas with excess moisture such as kitchens, bathrooms, or laundry rooms. When outside they frequent sewers, flower beds, and mulch piles. American Cockroaches have a fondness for anything decaying, though pet food is a particular love of theirs.
- German Cockroach: Smaller in size, German cockroaches only grow to be around 5/8 of an inch in length. They are light brown to tan with two dark parallel stripes behind their heads. These roaches rarely fly but can run alarmingly quickly. They are most likely to be found in kitchens and bathrooms will go anywhere they can find food, including living rooms and bedrooms. They will also eat things like soap, glue, and toothpaste.
- Oriental Cockroach: These roaches are oval-shaped and shiny black, growing up to an inch long. They cannot fly and prefer to frequent basements and crawlspaces. When outdoors they are often found in sewers or under debris such as leaves and firewood. The Oriental cockroach can survive for up to a month without food and prefers decaying matter.
One thing all cockroaches have in common is their ability to spread disease. Cockroaches transmit 33 different kinds of bacteria, six different parasitic worms, and seven other human pathogens. They can also worsen asthma and allergy symptoms.
