Cockroach Control In Chicago: Professionals vs. DIY

December 13, 2021

It can be tempting, especially if your wallet is thin, to try and take care of pests yourself. There is a lot of information online about how to take care of dangerous infestations that, in practice, will only waste your time and jeopardize your health. DIY pest control doesn’t work well for most pests in Chicago, but it especially won’t work for cockroaches, a species that has survived over 100 million years.

Three Common Chicago Cockroaches

It may seem like all cockroaches are the same, but unfortunately for all of mankind, some cockroaches are more mobile, more dangerous, or more inclined to eat non-edible things. The most common cockroaches in Chicago show a range of differences.

  1. American Cockroach: These roaches are reddish-brown with a yellowish figure-eight behind their heads. They are oval shaped and can grow to be over two inches in length. They fly short distances and prefer areas with excess moisture such as kitchens, bathrooms, or laundry rooms. When outside they frequent sewers, flower beds, and mulch piles. American Cockroaches have a fondness for anything decaying, though pet food is a particular love of theirs.
  2. German Cockroach: Smaller in size, German cockroaches only grow to be around 5/8 of an inch in length. They are light brown to tan with two dark parallel stripes behind their heads. These roaches rarely fly but can run alarmingly quickly. They are most likely to be found in kitchens and bathrooms will go anywhere they can find food, including living rooms and bedrooms. They will also eat things like soap, glue, and toothpaste.
  3. Oriental Cockroach: These roaches are oval-shaped and shiny black, growing up to an inch long. They cannot fly and prefer to frequent basements and crawlspaces. When outdoors they are often found in sewers or under debris such as leaves and firewood. The Oriental cockroach can survive for up to a month without food and prefers decaying matter.

One thing all cockroaches have in common is their ability to spread disease. Cockroaches transmit 33 different kinds of bacteria, six different parasitic worms, and seven other human pathogens. They can also worsen asthma and allergy symptoms.

DIY Methods Aren’t Safe Or Effective

Cockroaches can fit through remarkably small gaps to come indoors, but more often than not, they’re brought inside by accident either with the firewood, outside stored boxes, or with the groceries. Unfortunately, these critters are near-impossible to get rid of through DIY methods and over-the-counter products. Here are some reasons DIY methods don’t work.

  • You aren’t solving the root issue.
  • Cockroaches have natural defenses against pesticides.
  • The infestation is likely larger than a few traps can control.

It’s not safe to come into close contact with roaches or to use harmful pesticides and roach bombs yourself. Many of the substances recommended for roach control are not approved by the EPA and could be a serious health risk.
