Why Stink Bugs Are a Serious Nuisance in Chicago

The brown marmorated stink bug is an invasive species with few effective natural predators in North America, which means populations spread without meaningful biological check across Illinois each year. As daylight shortens in late summer, stink bugs enter diapause: a dormancy triggered by the shorter days of fall. They seek warm, protected spaces inside structures to wait out winter.

They enter through cracks around window frames, damaged door sweeps, torn screens, gaps in siding, and ventilation openings. Once inside, they settle into wall voids, attics, and crawlspaces. They don’t bite, won’t breed indoors, and cause no structural damage. The problem is numbers and odor: a gland on the abdomen releases a persistent smell when bugs are disturbed or crushed, and that odor can linger for hours. Large overwintering populations tend to emerge near light sources, making windows and light fixtures a recurring gathering point through late fall and winter.
